Your dental routine must be as up to date as any other regime you follow. And flossing is an important quotient of that! It is one of the simplest and most effective ways to keep your gums healthy.

Using toothpicks tends to damage the gums and teeth hence; flossing is always a better option!

Therapeuo dental and multi-speciality clinic, a dental clinic in Mumbai recommends flossing at least once a day, either in the morning or at night. Here’s a sneak peek on the best method to do it. Therapeuo dental and multi-speciality clinic is also known as a celebrity dentist in Mumbai.

Let us see how the whole process works with a step by step process.

Step 1 – Take about 30cm of the dental floss and wrap most of it around your left middle finger. Wind the remaining floss around your right middle finger.

Step 2 – Grip the floss between your thumbs and index fingers and then gently slide if between two teeth, using a saw-like motion. Gently slide the floss down against the teeth and down each side of the pink triangle of the gum between the teeth.

Step 3 – Gently remove the floss from the teeth. Wind a little bit of the floss from your left finger to your right finger to move along the dirty part and to give you a fresh area of floss to clean the next two teeth. Repeat this when ever two teeth are touching.

What is flossing?

It is one important way to clean between your teeth. It involves wrapping a piece of soft strings around your fingers and navigating it up and down between the teeth and below the gumline to remove plaque and bacteria that cause gum diseases.

Why flossing is important?

Many of the most common dental health problems start with plaque build up. If the plaque between your teeth is not removed, it can quickly harden into tarter, leading to gum disease. There is also evidence that gum bacteria can attach to the fatty plaques in blood vessels and set off the inflammatory process, which can lead to a heart attack or stroke!

Flossing can also help keep your smile bright by preventing discoloration between the teeth.

Does flossing damage teeth?

This is a common myth, it does not damage your teeth and nor does it increase the gaps between your teeth. Proper technique is important if you want to get the full benefit of flossing. Beware of flossing too hard; if you do, that could damage the tissue between your teeth.

What is plaque?

It is a clear, sticky substance made up of food, saliva, bacteria and acid.

Do children need to floss?

Children should start flossing as soon as they have two teeth that touch.
