Humans have two sets of dentitions- the milk or the deciduous set and the adult or the permanent set. The deciduous dentition consists of 20 teeth (10 in each arch) and are the first ones to erupt in the mouth at the age of 6-7 months. As the child ages, these are replaced by the permanent ones. The permanent dentition consists of 32 teeth in total with 16 in each arch and usually begin to erupt around the age of 7 years and continue erupting till teenage years. The wisdom teeth or 3rd molars may or may not erupt. Their eruption time may vary and could be delayed up to 24 years of age or even further.

A tooth has two parts- crown and root. Crown is that portion of the tooth that is visible in the mouth. It is this part that is usually affected by cavities. Root is that portion of the tooth that connects the tooth to the bone. This is not visible and is covered by a layer called the cementum. This is very sensitive in nature.

Our tooth is made up of three layers. The outermost layer is the hardest called Enamel. Although it is the hardest substance in our body, it is still prone to get cavities. Within Enamel lies the second layer called Dentin and the innermost layer is rich with blood vessels and nerves called pulp. Dentin has nerve endings and is very sensitive. Generally, with age Enamel tends to wear out exposing more of the Dentin underneath leading to yellowish appearance of the teeth and sensitivity issues.

Once any portion of the tooth is affected, the damage is permanent and irreversible. The only way to prevent it from degrading any further is early intervention. Get a routine check-up every 6 months to ensure good health of your teeth and gums.
